Three Tips for Designing a Timeless Kitchen
First off, I want to preface that “timeless” means something different to everyone when it comes to design. Some people are happy if their kitchen design lasts them five years, others want it to last for twenty years. These tips are meant to help you design a kitchen that will last for as long as you want it to because let’s face it, a new kitchen isn’t cheap!
#1 Your Layout Matters (A LOT)
The number one thing I see people do wrong with their kitchens is mimic the exact layout they had previously even if it didn’t function for them or could’ve worked better.
Take the time to really think about if there are areas in your kitchen that annoy you or you just don’t like and write them down so that when you’re thinking of your new kitchen layout you have those handy. That way you can design your new layout to eliminate those annoyances and make it a much more timeless design.
If your kitchen right now functions perfectly for you, then great! Don’t fix what isn’t broken, but that is rarely the case.
#2 Think of Your Design as a Whole
Before you go to showrooms or cabinet shops and start selecting your finishes, think through the entire design.
People often will jump right into selecting things without thinking everything through and then find themselves making selections for important things like their cabinets without any clue what else will be going on in the kitchen. Or, they end up taking advice from the cabinet store about what colour they should use when the salesmen don’t have all the context to give an accurate answer so you end up with whatever is the most popular right now (aka the current trend).
This is the fastest way to end up with a kitchen design that will only last for a couple of years. Take the time to think about the entire design before shopping around for anything.
#3 Pick Your Cabinets Intentionally
Your cabinets are arguably the most important part of creating a timeless design.
I often hear people say that coloured cabinets are a bad idea because they aren’t as timeless compared to neutral or stained cabinets. I disagree. Honey oak-stained cabinets get renovated so often I can’t even count it. However, I understand why people think that way because picking a neutral colour is typically the “safest” option when doing it on your own.
There are a lot of nuances to picking the right colour or stain for your kitchen, but my best advice is to go with what you like. There are always colours that people naturally like and have liked for MANY years whether or not they are the current trend. Follow your instincts and go with what feels right to you.
